Chapter 5

We were finally able to get all the customers waited on and out by just after nine. I was both anxious and excited to move on to the party portion of our evening. If John was even the least bit worried, he didn’t let on. It seemed he was as excited as I was, even if a little wary of our invitee. We made our final preparations and closed the store before we headed over to Bram’s Keep.

I expected a line to get in or something of that sort. There was nothing. From the outside, it looked exactly as it always did. No one loitered around and there wasn’t anything on the outside indicating that there was a Halloween party going on inside. Maybe whatever happened earlier had been a figment of my imagination. I slid my hand into the pocket of my skirt and pulled out the coins I'd been given earlier; I hadn't imagined it. They were both there. I looked up, and it dawned on me that the sword on the coins matched the design on the doors. No wonder it looked familiar.

“Well, are we ready?” I asked, looking at John.

“I’m not sure. I mean, yes, but there’s this weird feeling I have. I know it’s just a party, but something feels… different.”

"I have the same feeling. If we aren't having fun, we can always leave. But if you feel like we should go, then we don't have to go in," I said, but I'd be crushed if he admitted that's what he wanted.

"No. I want to go in, there's just a weird feeling. I'm sure it's nothing. Let's go," he said, pushing the doors open.

We walked into the foyer, a smallish room with a hallway leading off that curved so I couldn't see past it. Either way, it was dark. Another couple had just left the desk near the side wall and made their way toward the hallway. With the coins in my hand, I walked over to the desk where a young woman stood. She smiled at me as I walked up, with John behind me.

"Hi. I was given these earlier today, and he said to show them here," I said, handing them over.

"Of course, I'll take those, and you can just…" she stopped when I slid the coins into her hand, looking at them curiously. "Oh… um, just a moment.”

She slipped the coins into a drawer instead of placing them in the basket in front of her with what looked like similar coins. I was confused and worried.

“Is there something wrong? He said to just…”

“No, nothing’s wrong. He’ll be with you in a moment,” she said with a weird smile.

“I don’t underst-“

“Welcome, Mina,” I heard in that voice. “And John. Thank you for coming.”

I turned to see Vlad emerging from the hallway. I’m pretty sure he’d changed. I wasn’t absolutely sure, but it seemed like it. I think I would have remembered if he'd been in a suit before, not that I could focus on much earlier.
